We gave a presentation about our game idea and it was poorly received. I believe this to be a result of the presentation not clearly demonstrating what we planned to do, I rushed together a demo in Unity on the morning of the presentation and I feel that it may have been a mistake to do so. My reasoning at the time was that demos are good and therefore having a demo was better than not having a demo, but unfortunately the demo didn’t really give much indication as to what made the game re-playable. It is possible that we conveyed our vision for the game perfectly and it’s simply not a very good concept, but I don’t know if that’s a truth my ego is ready for.

In response to the feedback we revised our ideas and wrote up a brief design document for the game.

  • 1-2 Player game in which players spit from a rooftop onto a target. The selection process for the target will vary between game modes.
  • Core loop of the game is similar to that of Peggle, in which the player must fire a marble which bounces off pegs in the level for points, the key difference being that in Peggle the player beats the level by hitting all the orange pegs, in this game the player is successful when they hit a specific target at the bottom of the level.
  • The level will have various obstacles with different behaviours, such as some which move and some which don’t, some are breakable after being hit and some remain throughout the level. On hitting the target, a player is given a score based on how many shots it took to hit their target, the accuracy of the shot and various ‘style’ bonuses (such as spitting upwards or bouncing the spit off something).
  • Single player mode will feature a campaign, through which the player will progress. Different levels will have different layouts and feature new types of challenges. A player will have to score above a certain threshold to advance onto the next level. As the player progresses, they develop new types of spit and methods of controlling where it lands. Each target in this mode is pre-determined for the level.
  • Two player mode in which the players will choose their opponent’s target and they will take it in turns to hit their target before their opponent hits theirs.
  • Two player mode in which the players compete for the same target.
